I turned 34 the other day - and my first choice for a birthday dinner was and always will be sushi. I'd read a few interesting pieces about a legendary Japanese restaurant, tiny and plopped right next to the most famous brewery/restaurant in Munich, the Hofbrau Haus. And I heard that the prices were reasonable and the sushi incredible. Naturally, we headed there.

Three things.

1. The sushi is fantastic - fresh, luscious, huge, perfectly prepared.
Chris and I split 2 rolls for an appetizer; good idea because each of the six pieces is substantial. For dinner, I had first: one scallop ngiri, and one eel ngiri.
The scallop was tender, the eel was soft and sweet -- both delicious:

2. If you don't like sushi, go there anyway! Chris had one of their "big bowls" and loved it. Everything seems to be fresh, all the preparations are light. Sure you can order fried stuff but that's just to pacify the people who crave a heavy meal.

3. If you order more than 3 sakes, prepare to be humiliated by the waiter.
Service is fast, no doubt, and sometimes even attentive -- but I have a feeling this can vary greatly depending upon the night, the waiter, and how busy it is. As a customer, you are very much aware that there are 10 people waiting for your table should you have a problem with the service. But, that being said, they were friendly enough ...until I asked my waiter for "noch ein sake bitte" (another sake please) and he gaped at me with wide eyes and repeated at the top of his lungs "NOCH EIN SAKE!!!????"....We (and everyone around us) laughed it off but it was a little weird.

Overall, Shoya is definitely worth a visit, if not a cult devotion.
